The UK has welcomed the world’s first dual-fuel ammonia-powered ship, which is a big step forward in making maritime transport greener.
The Singapore-flagged ship, Fortescue Green Pioneer, has docked in the UK to show how ammonia can work as a sustainable fuel for marine use. It’s the first ship of its type, using four-stroke engines, with two of them able to run on either ammonia or diesel.
Ammonia, as a zero-carbon fuel, could really help cut down greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry.
An ammonia-powered ship showcases how we can make shipping more sustainable, which is a bold but necessary goal that has the full support of the UK Government.
On 1st March the Fortescue Green Pioneer docked at the Port of Southampton, and Port State Control inspections were conducted by the MCA’s Survey and Inspection team.
Decarbonisation in the maritime sector is a huge priority for the UK and shipping, and Fortescue Green Pioneer successfully demonstrates what a future of cleaner shipping could look like.
