Maersk currently has 19 methanol powered container carriers on order at Hyundai Heavy Industries. This includes six vessels with a stated capacity of over 17,000 TEU.
The vessels will be capable of burning methanol as well as conventional low-sulphur fuel.
The vessel is expected to join the fleet in 2023.
Maersk have said that when the vessels are deployed and have replaced older vessels, they will generate annual CO2 emissions savings of approximately 2.3m tonnes.
