BWA Member Interview: Speyside Capital

BWA's Graham Sheen, talks to Paul Kopec, CEO of Speyside Capital, about their business, technology, and industry challenges.

Graham: Can you provide an overview of what your business does?

Paul: Speyside Capital specialises in Scotch Whisky cask ownership and management for individuals, single cask bottling and warehousing services. This business sits alongside our trade service offering technical distillation consultation for new and established distilleries. We leverage our industry connections to provide opportunities for individuals to become the proud owners of unique casks from some of Scotland’s most renowned distilleries.

Graham: When did you first become engaged with the BWA and what were the key reasons for joining the association?

Paul: It made perfect sense to join the BWA allowing us to further align ourselves with our commitment to compliance and excellence as we operate in the industry. The BWA membership also offers invaluable resources that enable us to stay ahead of the curve.

Graham: What are currently the biggest challenges that the industry is facing?

Paul: One we are always faced with is navigating the landscape of international trade dynamics and regulatory changes. We regularly need to adapt to do business and work with clients on all four corners of the globe.

Graham: How can these challenges be resolved?

Paul: Staying informed and proactive is crucial to us so we can adapt accordingly and mitigate potential risks. Our Compliance Director plays a pivotal role in making sure our operations adhere to regulatory standards and best practices while also monitoring news and regulatory updates. Joining BWA can also provide valuable support and guidance.

Graham: What innovations can you see coming to the industry in the future?

Paul: We are hopeful to not only witness but play a role in improving accessibility through technology. Leveraging this technology to provide private Cask owners with more transparent traceability of ownership throughout the supply chain. These innovations will break traditional barriers, opening doors for a new generation of whisky enthusiasts to engage with Whisky’s heritage and unique maturation journey, ultimately into their own unique bottling.

Graham: What are your priorities over the next 12 months?

Paul: Our focus remains on offering a premium whisky portfolio to our clients, while leveraging digital solutions to enhance accessibility, traceability and convenience.

Thanks to Paul Kopec for taking part in this interview.
